From the Atlantic to Everest
Hi! My name is Neil Ward and I live for adventures.
I have just rowed the Atlantic Ocean on board Britannia III in 39 days, leaving La Gomera in the Canary Islands on the 4th January and arriving in Port St Charles in Barbados on the 11th Feb.
This was a world record attempt we unfortunately did not get. It was, however, the fastest-ever, mixed-sex crossing and the fastest crossing this year. An amazing adventure,
I have recovered well and am just disappointed not to be able to continue with my plan to climb Everest this spring.
No one has ever climbed Everest and rowed the Atlantic in the same year...
The plan was to have gone back to the Himalayas in April to do a full traverse of Everest from the Tibetan side, over the summit and down the Nepalese side, without the aide of supplementary O2 or Sherpa support, re-joining forces with my climbing partner, Andrew Lock. Unfortunately, after much paper work and planning the Chinese/Tibetan border was closed this Spring and all climbing permits cancelled.
Exciting plans for 2010-2011
My plan for next year is pretty much to finish off what I started this year... projects like this don't just happen, and one must work hard to realize one's dreams...
I plan to climb Manaslu (8,163 metres) this Autumnn 2010 without Sherpa support or supplementary 02.
There is to be another world record attempt this new year (Dec '10/Jan '11) for the Atlantic row from Spain to the Caribbean. We learned a huge amount from the last trip. The boat is new, faster and stronger, with a crew of just 6. This crossing, means a lot to me and I am very motivated for the world record in under 30 days.
The pre-planned traverse of Everest will be attempted the following Spring from Tibet to arrive in Nepal, (hoping all climbing permits and Chinese border crossings go ahead!)
The traverse of Everest is best done in the Spring, weather windows are key to successful climbing, and I want to give myself the best possible chance of success.
